FEDERAL WAY — Shorewood’s Mackey Hopen won the state championship in the 50-yard freestyle with an All-America consideration time of 21.00 seconds. Hopen was second in the 100 breaststroke. Teammate Eddie Young placed first in diving with 439.60 points. Pat Fillingham and Jack Beam of Shorewood were 10th and 15th, respectively. Thor Stenfjord took third in the 200 individual medley. Andre Garrison was 14th in the 100 breaststroke. The Thunderbirds were second in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Oak Harbor’s Yale Rosen was sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Oak Harbor’s Jacob and Josh Jepsen were 10th and 13th, respectively, in the 200 IM. Josh Jepsen was 12 in the 100 breaststroke. Wildcats Price Hu and Brandon Vagt were 13th and 16th in the 100 butterfly. The Wildcats were sixth in the 200 medley relay and ninth in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association hadn’t posted team scores or results for the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay events when The Herald went to press, but Mercer Island had a commanding lead and was well on its way to a sixth straight team title.
