Prep swimming: Kentridge Invite

FEDERAL WAY — Despite not having an individual champion, the Kamiak boys swimming team was able to top all other Wesco programs while earning a third-place finish at the Kentridge Invitational on Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Competing without talent swimmer Liam Sosinsky, who traveled to Austin, Texas to swim at the USA Swimming Austin Grand Prix, the Knights saw several swimmers earn state qualifying times.

Senior Chris Choi captured third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.61) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.31). John Stupey and Andre Tacuyan set Kamiak school records in the 100 backstroke (55.40) and 100 butterfly (54.45), respectively.

Kamiak, which finished behind Lakeside and Mercer Island in the final standings, is in a good position heading toward next month’s state meet, according to Knights’ head coach Chris Erickson.

“(We had) a lot of really good swims … Everybody was at season-best times and some personal-best times,” Erickson said. “… We love this competition for sure and that’s what helps everybody do better.”

Trent Roberts finished fifth in the 100 freestyle (49.70) with another state time for the Knights and Kamiak qualified its 200 freestyle relay team for state with a fourth-place finish (1:32.19).

“We hadn’t (qualified) our 200 freestyle relay (for state) so today we finally got that done,” Erickson said. “… We have at least one kid qualified in every event (for state) which we’ve never done before. We’re always short one event or two events.”

The Knights, who Erickson believes to be 55-1 in dual meets over the last four seasons, still must swim against Marysville-Pilchuck and Shorewood this season prior to the District meet.
