PREP SWIMMING ROUNDUP: Squalicum flexes its muscles

MOUNT VERNON — It’s a competitive meet when the second-place swimmers post state qualifying times.

Five second-place swimmers had 2A state qualifying times, two-thirds of the events in the meet were won with state times and Squalicum (8-0) remained undefeated on the season, defeating Archbishop Murphy 108-77 in a non-conference meet.

“They showed every bit the top contending team that they are,” Murphy head coach Mike McCloskey said.

The Storm won the 2A state title last season, and look to be favorites for a repeat this season.

“They’re loaded,” McCloskey said. “They won state last year and are definitely a contender this year.”

Eight of the 12 events were won with state qualifying times.

“It’s not normal for most meets,” McCloskey said. “We knew this would be a good one. It’s fun to go head to head. Even losing, because you get set up for state.”

When asked to pick a swimmer to highlight McCloskey laughed and said “they’ve got three of them. Plus a diver.”

“Freshman Carlee Bock has state title contending times,” McCloskey continued. “Rylie Martin is a returning sophomore who went (to state) last year. Camorah King is right up there in the best in the state in the breaststroke. (Leah) Strickling is definitely a contender in diving.”

Bock won the 200-yard freestyle in a state qualifying time of 2 minutes, 6.56 seconds, the 100 backstroke (1:05.08, another state time) and was a participant on the winning 200 medley (state qualifying time of 2:00.05) and 400 freestyle (4:05.81) relays.

Martin and King also swam on both relays and each had two individual wins, all in state qualifying times.

As for Murphy (7-2), it was led by Amy Renslo, who had a state qualifying time of 1:02.69 in the 100 butterfly and was on the Wildcats’ winning relay team in the 200 freestyle relay.

Sarah Bettag, also on the relay team, won the 100 freestyle (59.40) and had a state time finishing second in the 50 freestyle (26.49), nine hundreths of a second behind Martin and a full second better than her previous best time.

“We went at ‘em,” McCloskey said, “and put our best against their best … Our goal was to get our kids in state.

“I’m just glad we’re done with these guys.”
