STANWOOD — The Cascade doubles team of Jon Pham and Brenden Beaver staged back-to-back upsets to win the Wesco 4A North championship Thursday at Stanwood High School.
Pham and Beaver, the third-seeded team, knocked off second seeds Nichol Ratzke and Trevor Shields of Snohomish 7-5, 7-6 in the semifinals, then squeaked by top-seeded Reed Pecha and Zack Stockwell of Snohomish 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
Pham and Beaver will advance to next week’s 4A District 1 meet as the No. 1 seed from the North.
In the singles competition, No. 1-seeded Kyle Koetje of Stanwood cruised to the title, beating fourth-seeded Derek Thomas of Oak Harbor 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals and second-seeded Trevor Amsberry of Monroe 7-5, 6-1 in the final.

Top two seeds advance
Wesco 4A South meet: At Mill Creek, first-seeded Michael Chamerski of Jackson advanced to the singles final with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Shorewood’s Spencer Shin. Second-seeded Mike Stepenski of Edmonds-Woodway prevented an all-Jackson final by defeating Chamerski’s teammate, Robin Choi, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the doubles competition, Shorewood’s top-seeded team of Tristan Reni and Scott McConnell advanced to the final with a straight-sets victory over Joe Kim and Chris Raunio of Mountlake Terrace). They’ll face Ryan Williamson and Kevin Taylor of Jackson, who were straight-sets semifinal winners over Ryan Warren and Ian Southcote-Want of Edmonds-Woodway.

S. Whidbey’s Newman wins 2A district title
2A District 1 meet: At Bellingham, South Whidbey sophomore Riley Newman avenged a lost to Sehome’s Will Topp in last year’s 2A District 1 championship match by beating Topp 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 for this year’s title Thursday at Sehome High School.
Newman was fourth in last spring’s state meet while his sister, Lindsey, won her second straight state championship.
