Prep volleyball: Cascade 3, Mount Vernon 2

MOUNT VERNON — A battle for third place in Wesco 4A came down to the final set as Cascade outlasted Mount Vernon by scores of 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, 25-23 and 15-12 on Monday.

Even though the game came down to the wire, Cascade head coach Maddie Benson said her girls were ready for the challenge.

“The girls were pretty calm. That was our biggest thing tonight,” Benson said of the win that left Cascade in sole posession of third place in the Wesco 4A standings.

Benson credited her middle hitters, Olivia Chatters (7 blocks) and Paiten Hart, for keeping Cascade in the match.

“Tonight our middles stepped up in ways I’ve been expecting all season,” Benson said. “Both of our middles were getting touches on everything. They were constantly all over the place. Our middles tonight, they stepped up tremendously.”

The Bruins lost two consecutive matches last week and, including Monday night’s match, faced the top three teams in the league in less than a week. They will be faced with the same stretch of opponents to close the regular season. Benson said she hopes Monday’s win will help her team be ready for that stretch.

“Tonight was a big confidence win.”
