MONROE — Monroe was pushed to the max but held on to win a five-set thriller over Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday at the Monroe gym.
Monroe won the Wesco North match 25-13, 25-27, 25-19, 24-26 and 15-9.
Sophomore Melina Seabrook had 25 kills and 11 digs and teammate Meagan McPhetridge had 23 kills and 13 digs. The Bearcats also received 40 assists from Kendal Munoz and 24 digs from Nicole Reyling.
“The games that we won, we stayed much more calm and ended up dominating,” said Monroe head coach April Munoz. “The games we lost we got really panicky. Being Senior Night, there tends to be a lot of nerves so it took us some time to settle down.”
The difference in the five-game match, seemed to come down to Monroe’s (7-1 league, 11-1 overall) ability to scramble, keep the play alive while the Tomahawks (3-5, 6-6) ended up beating themselves with unforced errors, according to M-P head coach Shelly Johnson.
“It was a real intense match,” Johnson said. “Melina Seabrook was everywhere.”
Makiya Nelson led the Tomahawks with 22 kills while senior teammate Kate Vavrousek added 12 and Lexi Fitzmaurice had 39 assists. Libero Katie Peterson was one of the main forces in keeping rallies going with 30 digs.
