SHORELINE — The Oak Harbor volleyball team played the role of dragon-slayer on Tuesday night, going into top-seeded Shorewood’s home gym and beating the Thunderbirds in five sets in an elimination match in the 3A District 1 Tournament.
Oak Harbor dropped the first two sets against Shorewood, but rallied back to win the next three to take the match. The Wildcats will play Arlington on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Marysville Pilchuck High School in another elimination match.
“In the last three sets we stopped missing so many serves and tried to play steady,” Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor said. “Shorewood’s a tough team, so we feel very proud of ourselves. Shorewood had a crowd there and that was tough, but I’m really proud of the girls.”
Claire Anderson pounded out 32 kills and 22 digs to lead Oak Harbor, which also got 11 kills from Hailey Blau and 10 from Amelia Berner.
“They fed her the ball a lot both times we played them,” Shorewood coach Jen Chartrand said of Anderson. “She’s a great hitter, and we were having a tough time defending her. She was hitting open shots on the right side.”
