PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Jackson wins battle of top seeds

LYNNWOOD — Jackson defeated Meadowdale 3-0 in both team’s final Wesco South match of the regular season Wednesday night.

But both teams will be No. 1 seeds next week.

The Timberwolves won the match 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 to clinch a share of the Wesco South title and the No. 1 seed to the 4A District 1 tournament.

“That was definitely a goal at the beginning of the season (to get to districts),” Jackson head coach Erik Champoux said. “We have such a good team.”

Champoux explained the joy his team felt after the match, but also relayed their anticipation for what’s coming next.

“At the end of the match we were like ‘we won our division,’” Champoux said, “but this team looks at the big picture … they want to make it to state. As a coach, it’s nice to see that the kids see that. That they want to do something bigger.”

Meadowdale will also have a No. 1 seed. The Mavericks secured the top spot out of the Wesco South for the 3A District 1 playoffs.

Leigh-Ann Haataja had 17 kills and Christy Cain had 10 kills and three and a half blocks for Jackson (8-1 league, 13-1 overall). Freshman setter Haley MacDonald added 37 assists, Malisa Marisigan had 23 digs and Emmy Allan had 15 digs.

“(MacDonald) doesn’t always get the praise she deserves,” Champoux said. “To go out on a court and run an offense … that’s huge. I know her job is not an easy job and she has done a fantastic job of running the offense and setting a ball that hitters can hit. That’s a big reason why we’re where we are.”

The Mavericks (6-3, 9-5), who kept all three games relatively close, were led by Megan Nelson, who had 23 assists and 17 digs, Jessica Yi with 19 digs and Payton Shrum, who had six kills.

“We didn’t destroy everybody,” Champoux said. “I think that’s been a good thing for us and kept us grounded. It’s a nice balance. We’re confident, not cocky. And that’s a good thing for us.”
