MARYSVILLE — The Thunderbirds will enter the 3A state tournament as an undefeated top seed after beating the Spartans to clinch the 3A District 1 tournament title on Saturday.
Shorewood is 18-0 entering the state tournament, and will find out its first opponent when the draws are released on Sunday.
Elli Allen-Hatch pounded out 19 kills, Delaney Hopen added 18 and Joely Shepared tacked on 11 as the Thunderbirds presented a balanced offensive attack against Stanwood, who forced Shorewood to respond to an opening-set loss on Saturday.
“We came in a little relaxed and knowing that we already had a berth to state, and it took us a little bit to wake up and decide that we truly wanted to leave this part of the season undefeated,” Shorewood coach Jen Chartrand said. “After the first set, we just talked about how we deserved to be where we are, but when you play good teams, they’re not going to roll over and let you take a match or even a set from them.”
Maria Bartell tacked on 25 digs for Shorewood.
Devon Martinka led Stanwood (12-5) with 13 kills, and the Spartans will advance to state as the districts No. 2 seed.
Chartrand said that her team will go into the 3A state tournament with the mentality of a 0-0 team.
“We’re really just going to focus on wiping the slate clean, because being 18-0 doesn’t matter anymore,” she said. “We’ve seen some great teams this season, but we’re going to see more. I’m confident we’ll be successful.”
