PREP VOLLEYBALL

YAKIMA — There was a little bit of everything for the Darrington volleyball team as it controlled one game then faced a little more difficulty in another game at the 2B state tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Thursday.

Darrington came out firing in a 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 first-round win over Northwest Christian (Spokane), led by Hailey Wales with 10 kills and eight service aces and Mandy Powell with nine kills and 20 digs.

However, the Loggers ran into some difficulties in their quarterfinal match against Tekoa-Oakesdale, the defending 1B state champion who moved up to 2B this season.

Led by 6-foot, left-handed middle hitter Shelby Puckett, who’s signed a letter of intent to play at Eastern Washington University, Tekoa-Oakesdale defeated Darrington 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.

“(Puckett’s) the best hitter in the field of teams,” Darrington head coach Greg Powell said. “We had a hard time containing her. She was a real force out there and we hadn’t seen a hitter of her caliber all season.”

The Loggers coach praised the work of Darrington’s Mandy Powell, who led the Loggers with eight kills and 22 digs in the second game, and her “leadership as the lone senior of the team.”

Darrington (11-5 overall) faces Toutle Lake at noon today with the winner of that game advancing to the 4th/7th place game. The Loggers are going for their sixth state trophy in ten trips. Darrington finished fifth last year.

Shorecrest 3, Lynnwood 0: At Shoreline, In the 3A District 1 tournament Jamie McDonald came up big for Shorecrest with 11 kills and two blocks to lead the Scots to the 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 win over Lynnwood. With the win Shorecrest (11-5 overall) advanced to play Ferndale Saturday at noon with the winner of that advancing to a game for the second and final state berth. Lynnwood (8-9) was led by Laycee Hill who had 20 assists and Katie Thurston with seven digs.
