PREP WRESTLING/SWIMMING ROUNDUP: Cedarcrest takes Cascade Conference lead

DUVALL — The Cedarcrest wrestling team has an identity that has worked to its advantage — young wrestlers in the small weight classes and veteran grapplers at the heavier end.

The combination paid off Thursday night as Cedarcrest defeated South Whidbey 62-15 in a Cascade Conference meet at Cedarcrest High School, keeping the Red Wolves undefeated in the Cascade Conference at 2-0, 3-1 overall. South Whidbey is now 1-1, 1-1.

“We are two opposites of the spectrum,” seventh-year Cedarcrest head coach Eric Pedeferri said of his balanced team of young guns and veteran leadership. “We are a good building team … Now we are trying to crack back into the top 10 in state.”

Cedarcrest totalled six pins, and Tim Hagreen’s 12-2 major decision in the 189-pound match started a string of three straight wins to finish the meet.

“Tim went against a tough South Whidbey opponent,” Pedeferri said. “He really was focused, he went out and took it.”
