Prep Wrestling/Swimming Roundup: Edmonds-Woodway secures runner-up finish in Wesco South

EDMONDS — The reward for winning the wrestling match between Edmonds-Woodway and Mariner on Thursday was simple — win and take second place in the Wesco South.

Mac Hutchinson’s major decision at 130-pounds in the final match of the evening secured that win for the Warriors.

Going into Hutchinson’s final match of the night, E-W was clinging to a 36-30 advantage and Mariner could have tied the meet with a pin. Hutchinson made sure that didn’t happen, defeating Nikolay Koltsav 14-1.

Edmonds-Woodway coach Joe Trieu said that Stefan Carlson got the match off to a good start for the Warriors (8-1 league, 8-4 overall). Carlson was tied 4-4 with Jesse Johnson going into the third period, but was able to prevail.

“It was a close match all the way through and set the tone for the entire match,” Trieu said.

Ryan Brown (285-pounds) also brought some momentum for the Warriors despite a loss. Brown trailed Dean Bakeberg 5-1 going into the third period, but an escape, a takedown and a near fall got Brown right back into the match, which went into overtime tied at 7-7. Brown eventually was pinned in overtime.

Despite losing, Trieu said that Brown’s match helped “bring some momentum all the way through,” for the Warriors.

Last season, the Warriors won the Wesco South, but after losing four state wrestlers and two more state alternates, Trieu wasn’t quite sure what to expect this season. The Warrior wrestlers responded with the answer Trieu was hoping to see.

“It’s amazing to see when they put their minds to something what can come out,” Trieu said.

With the loss, Mariner fell to 7-2 in league and 8-4 overall.

Complete individual results were not reported.
