Everett’s second-round series against Prince George begins in two days and there’s some intriguing storylines going into the series.
For Everett there’s right wing Dan Gendur, a former Cougar who became the only player in league history to be on the roster for both teams in the same game earlier this season. He was a scratch for the Cougars in the first part of the game, which was postponed after two periods because of damaged ice in Prince George. Then after being traded he played for Everett when the game was completed months later. Gendur was buried on the depth chart in Prince George and requested a trade, then became a top-line player for Everett. He still has many friends playing for the Cougars, but he’ll no doubt be motivated to beat the team that never gave him a full chance.
Then there is Prince George’s situation in goal. Overager Scott Bowles appeared to be the Cougars’ No. 1 down the stretch during the regular season. However, the Cougars decided to go with 19-year-old Real Cyr in the first round, and Cyr led Prince George to a sweep of Kamloops. It appears Cyr will get the nod again against Everett, but Prince George coach Drew Schoneck said he expects to see both netminders a some point in the series. Teams generally pick one goaltender and stick with him through the playoffs, so we’ll see how Prince George’s strategy ultimately plays out.
Meanwhile, Everett had its most crowded practice session since the preseason Wednesday. Not only were all 27 players on the active roster healthy enough to participate, the Tips also have a few prospects skating with the team this week. 1989-born goaltender Shayne Barrie and 1991-born forward Brett Chartier were the new faces Wednesday.
