The Canada Winter Games begin this weekend in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The men’s hockey competition is actually a U-16 tournament, meaning the provincial teams from western Canada are comprised mainly of players selected in the past bantam draft.
Everett has three prospects who will compete in the tournament. Both of the team’s second-round picks, center Ryan Chynoweth and defenseman Ty Hand, will be representing their provinces — Chynoweth with Alberta, Hand with the Northwest Territories. Both Chynoweth and Hand have already signed education contracts with the Tips. Also, fifth rounder Geordie Maguire will be playing for Manitoba.
The men’s hockey competition begins Saturday and continues through next Friday. Alberta and Manitoba are both in Pool B, which is the middle pool. Northwest Territories is in Pool C, which is the lower pool.
The tournament can be followed at the Canada Winter Games website.
