Providence advances to boys soccer title game

The dream run by the Providence Classical Christian boys soccer team came to an end.

A day after scoring three goals in 5 minutes to pull off a stunning comeback win over Bear Creek, the Highlanders couldn’t pull off the upset Nov. 19, losing 1-0 to Waitsburg/Prescott in the Class 1B/2B boys state championship game.

The defending champs PCCS had its opportunities, including a penalty kick with 10 minutes to play, but the ball never could find the back of the net.

“We had our chances, but we couldn’t quite get them to count,” said PCCS coach Nathan Morris.

Trailing 2-0 with 5 minutes to play in the semifinal game, even the PCCS coaches were thinking about third place, but the players had other ideas. The Highlanders scored three goals in the final 5 minutes, including the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining and PCCS beat Bear Creek.

“To be honest, we were thinking about playing in (today’s) third-place game,” said Morris of the team’s late deficit. “It was amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

After his team tied the score at 2 with 3 minutes to play, Highlanders forward Andrew Moisant buried a shot in the goal from the top of the box to give PCCS the win.

After a scoreless first half, Bear Creek scored consecutive goals 8 and 9 minutes into the second half to build its lead.

PCCS never gave up even when it looked bleak. With 5 minutes left, Aaron Johnson scored to give the Highlanders a glimmer of hope. Two minutes later Luke Morris scored to knot the score at 2 and set up Moisant’s game-winner.

What To Watch This Week

Meadowdale alumni basketball game: Former players, such as Brian Dennis and Tyce Tallman will be featured in the first annual event at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 23 at Meadowdale High School. Four different teams will be facing off against each other. The 2011-12 Blue vs. White game will follow the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door with proceeds going to the boys basketball program.
