Providence knocks off No. 1 Pittsburgh

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Weyinmi Efejuku scored 16 and Providence upset No. 1 Pittsburgh 81-73 on Tuesday night for its first win over a top-ranked team in 33 years.

Sharaud Curry added 15 points for the Friars (17-11, 9-7 Big East), who picked up a big victory for their NCAA tournament hopes. DeJuan Blair fouled out on a moving pick with 46 seconds left as Pittsburgh (25-3, 12-3) tried to rally.

No. 18 LSU 81, Florida 75

BATON ROUGE, LA. — Marcus Thornton scored 32 points and the Tigers (24-4, 12-1) clinched a share of the SEC title by beating the Gators (21-7, 8-5).

Boston College 72, No. 23 Florida St. 67

BOSTON — Tyrese Rice hit a key 3-pointer with 20.5 seconds to play to lead the Eagles (20-9, 8-6 ACC) to an upset of the Seminoles (21-7, 8-5).

Seattle U 63, Eastern Washington 59 (OT)

CHENEY — Austen Powers scored 19 points and Mountlake Terrace High alum Mike Boxley converted a key three-point play in overtime, helping the Redhawks (18-6) beat the Eagles (12-16) for their 10th straight victory.

Calhoun’s rant ‘embarrassing’

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun’s tirade at a freelance journalist posing questions about the his $1.6 million salary was an “embarrassing display,” the state’s governor Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Tuesday. Calhoun blew up at Ken Krayeske, a free-lance journalist and political activist who questioned the veteran coach about his salary after a game Saturday. Calhoun hasn’t spoken with the media since the tirade.

Wow! Tickets actually are available

ATLANTA — In another sign of the trying economic times, Atlantic Coast Conference officials said Tuesday tickets are available for the men’s basketball tournament. The ACC will make tickets available to the general public for the first time since 1966. They go on sale starting next Monday for the March 12-15 tournament, which will be held in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.
