Later today we should get a list of the undrafted rookies who have signed with Seattle (usually that list comes out the Sunday of the draft, but because of the lockout teams couldn’t sign those players) and among those expected to join the Seahawks is quarterback Josh Portis, an intriguing prospect for an undrafted player. A highly touted prospect from Los Angeles, Portis went to Florida but after a year transferred to Maryland. From there he ended up at Division II California University of Pennsylvania.
Obviously the bouncing around and drop to the D-II level hurt his prospects, but Portis is still an intriguing prospect because of his size (6-4), athleticism and arm strength, but was not selected in the draft.
Like all rookies, Portis will have a tough battle ahead to make the roster, but considering Seattle currently has only Charlie Whitehurst under contract, Portis will get a real look from the coaching staff.
Also, according to various reports, the Seahawks agreed to terms with several players late last night. Jeron Johnson, a safety from Boise State, wrote on twitter that he’s heading to Seattle, as did Ricardo Lockette, a speedy receiver from Fort Valley State. Harvard tackle Brent Osborne is also heading for Seattle according to the Detroit Free Press. The New Jersey Star-Ledger reported that Nebraska DE Pierre Allen has agreed to terms.
These could still change–it’s not uncommon for a rookie to agree to sign with one team, then get a better offer or feel they have a better opportunity to make a roster in another city–so nothing is final yet.
