SEATTLE — The University of Washington football team is expected to return to the practice field Monday afternoon without its junior leader.
Quarterback Jake Locker, who earlier in the day was named one of 15 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award, is expected to get extended time off this week because of a bruised quadriceps, head coach Steve Sarkisian said. The Huskies (3-5) have a bye this week, and Locker does not appear to be in danger of missing the Nov. 5 game at UCLA.
Locker and linebacker E.J. Savannah (broken thumb) are among several players who could sit this week while the coaching staff evaluates younger players. The move is meant to give the upperclassmen some rest while giving the coaches a chance to look at the team’s depth.
Ronnie Fouch and true freshman Keith Price should both see practice time a quarterback this week. Sarkisian said he wanted to see Price run the UW offense after the freshman spent the first eight weeks of the season running the scout team.
Sarkisian said that Locker suffered the injury early in Saturday’s loss to Oregon but that the quarterback played through the pain. Fouch replaced him after the score got out of hand.
Locker has yet to miss a snap this season due to injury.
The Huskies will practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week before taking the next three days off.
