As this winter’s razor clam season winds down on the coast, at least one more dig has been approved by the state for April 21, 22 and 23. Long Beach and Twin Harbors beaches will be open all three days. Copalis and Mocrocks will be open Monday, April 23, only.
Tides are as follows: Saturday, minus 0.3 feet at 7:28 a.m.; Sunday, minus 0.4 feet at 8:01 a.m.; and Monday, minus 0.4 feet at 8:35 a.m. New 2012-13 licenses will be required.
State clam manager Dan Ayres in Montesano said the last dig, April 7-9, pulled the largest crowd of the year to the beaches, and diggers averaged just under 15-clam limits. For the winter, Ayres said, there have been a total of about 170,000 participants on the beaches and they averaged about 13 clams per person, per trip. Because of difficult weather conditions much of the winter, the number of digger trips was well below the 245,000 people who dug during the 2010-11 season.
