From week to week, I end up covering the entire spectrum of high school sports events.
I spend most of my time during the winter season writing about basketball and wrestling. I also keep track of our local boys swimming and diving teams, but our other part-time prep writers do a great job covering swimming.
Based on my background, basketball is what I’m most familiar with. I always look forward to writing about hoops. And it’s the only sport I still play regularly. As a relatively fit 29-year-old, I want to keep playing as long as I can before I get too busy being a family man and/or my knees give out.
But just because I love basketball doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate other winter sports. Our area is blessed with a TON of top-notch wrestling coaches and programs that develop state champions. Since I started working at The Herald I’ve learned so much about wrestling, from the basics (the scoring system) to more complex aspects (various techniques and coaching strategies).
The same goes for swimming. Every year we have individuals, teams and coaches who rank among the state’s best. I try to learn as much about their sport as possible when I’m around them.
My point is … basketball is my favorite winter sport but I have learned to appreciate all of them.
