Reading advances to semis in Wesco South tennis tourney

EVERETT – Defending 4A boys tennis district champion Mike Reading of Jackson High School defeated Kamiak’s Edwin Lee 6-0, 6-1 Wednesday to advance to the Wesco South division semifinals.

Prior to his two-set quarterfinals victory, Reading, the division’s No. 1 seed, swept first-round opponent Mariner’s Ariel Santa Cruz, 6-0, 6-0. Reading improved to 14-0 for the season and 39-2 over the past two seasons.

“Mike is a very strong player,” Jackson coach David Hutt said. “He plays a strong mix of tennis. He has a very strong serve and he plays the volley very well.”

No. 4 seeded Sachin Narvekar, of Shorewood, defeated Meadowdale’s Patrick Donnelly, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and will meet Reading in the semifinals.

“They (Reading and Navekar) are both very strong competitors,” Hutt said. “It should be a very well played match.”

Jackson’s Alex Yee, who defeated Mike Klazynski of Kamiak, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, will face No. 2 seeded Reid Fenning of Edmonds-Woodway in the semifinals.

Fenning knocked off first-round opponent Mitch Sontra of Everett 6-1, 6-0 and Mountlake Terrace’s Andrew Lee 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

The defending 4A doubles champion team of Steve McCall and Scott Bourne of Shorewood defeated Everett’s Andrew Branson and Richard Oam 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 1 seeded Bourne and McCall will play Meadowdale’s Drew Eli and Alex Eli, who won their quarterfinals match 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.

The No. 3 seeded Normar Mapalo and Aaron Lee, of Shorewood, plays the No. 2 seeded Mike Maldazys and Sam Zipper of Edmonds-Woodway in the semifinals.
