Western Washington University libero Courtney Schneider has been named to the Daktronics/NCAA Division II All-America Volleyball third team.

Schneider, a sophomore from Snohomish, set school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records this season for digs (646) and digs per game (6.59). Her per-game average ranked fourth nationally.

Schneider helped Western to an 18-9 record and a fourth-place finish in the GNAC.

After just two seasons with the Vikings, Schneider already ranks fifth among Western’s all-time digs leaders with 1,178.

Soccer

Brown part of national-championship team: Katie Brown, a graduate of Sultan High School, was a member of the University of Portland women’s soccer team that won the NCAA Division I championship Dec. 4 with a 4-0 victory over UCLA in College Station, Texas.

Brown, a freshman defender-midfielder, played in 12 of the Pilots’ 27 games and recorded two shots on goal.

Portland finished the season 25-0-2.

Gymnastics

Gymnasts win all-around state titles: Two members of Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics won all-around titles in their age groups at the Levels 4-5-6 state meet held Dec. 4 in Bellevue.

In Level 4, Kasandra Numair, 8, of Everett, won the bars (a score of 9.40) and the beam (9.45) en route to the all-around title (36.90).

In level 5, Madeline McMurty, 11, of Everett, placed first on the beam (9.55) and in the floor exercises (9.20) and won the all-around title with a score of 36.425.

Bowling

McKinney rolls high series: Ryan McKinney of Snohomish rolled the high series last week in the Everett Parks and Recreation High School Mixed Bowling League. McKinney bowled games of 257, 257 and 197 for a 711 series.

Brandon Cavett of Lake Stevens rolled the high game of the week (278).

Among the girls, Kristen Kelley of Marysville-Pilchuck had the high game (191) and Lisa Shim of Kamiak rolled the high series (502).

Mariner remained in first place in the team standings with 258.5 points. Cascade was second with 231 and Everett moved past Marysville-Pilchuck into third place with 202.
