BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox placed left fielder Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Crawford, a top free agent acquisition by Boston during the offseason, was hurt after straining his left hamstring beating out an infield hit in a 10-4 win over the Brewers on Friday night.
“The medical people thought at least 10, 14 days (that he’d be out),” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “I talked to (Carl) this morning. He gets it.”
One of the top free agents available this past offseason, Crawford signed a $142-million, seven-year deal with the Red Sox.
After a slow start, he became a big contributor during Boston’s current hot stretch. The Red Sox have won 12 of 13 entering Saturday night’s game against the Brewers.
Boston recalled outfielder Josh Reddick from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Crawford’s place on the roster. He hit .230 with 14 homers and 36 RBIs for Pawtucket.
Crawford is batting .243 with six homers, 31 RBIs and eight stolen bases.
Darnell McDonald was scheduled to start on Saturday. Reddick and veteran Mike Cameron are also expected to get some time in left.
“I think we’ll fill in with Josh, Mac and Cam,” Francona said. “We’ll just piece it together.”
During a slow start, Crawford was moved around a lot in the order. He was hitting just .155 with one homer and six RBIs at the end of April.
