Two National League franchises dipped into the Western Conference for a pair of right-handed pitchers Wednesday during the second day of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft.
The Cincinnati Reds used the 1,005th overall pick to choose Snohomish’s Cody McAllister in the 34th round. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Cascade’s Antony Snow in the 37th round as the 1,093rd overall choice.
A third Wesco player, 2001 Marysville-Pilchuck graduate Tino Psaradelis, was taken in the 47th round by the Baltimore Orioles out of Bellevue Community College. Psaradelis, the 1,385th player chosen, plays center field.
“Three out of our league, that’s pretty good,” Snohomish coach Kim Hammons said.
Hammons said he spoke to McAllister shortly after he was notified by the Reds’ area scout.
“He was in shock. He was ecstatic. He’s living a dream,” Hammons said.
Hammons said he was not sure whether McAllister would elect to turn pro. He said the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder has a baseball scholarship to Edmonds Community College.
Snow has also been invited to play at Edmonds CC. His high school coach, Jim Willie, was also unsure what decision Snow might make regarding his amateur status.
Edmonds CC may lose a third right-handed pitcher. Ty Taubenheim, who prepped at Lynden H.S., was chosen in the 44th round as the 1,325th overall pick by the Oakland Athletics.
