REFLECTIONS: Gerth, Tuulola combine for three goals in Tips win

The Game

Tonight’s 4-2 Everett Silvertips victory was personally significant for a pair of Tips players. First, Spencer Gerth tallied his first career WHL goal to give the Tips a 1-0 lead early in the opening period (and celebrated as such), while Eetu Tuulola later scored twice in his regular-season home debut to help the Tips moved five points up of second-place Tri-City in the U.S. Division.

Gerth, who had one assist in 60 previous WHL games, is one of the most personable and talkative Silvertips players you’ll encounter. Thus far he has been mostly confined to the fourth line where he uses his size to the Tips’ advantage. As you can see below, he appeared both relieved and ecstatic to score his first goal:

Tuulola continues to look like a solid pickup in the CHL import draft. The Calgary Flames prospect scored two goals in four preseason games and now has three goals in four regular-season games. The difference? Both of his preseason goals came on power play one-timers. Thursday he displayed his puck-handling abilities by finishing twice at the net.

Everett Goaltender Carter Hart finished with 21 saves on 23 shots. Tri-City’s Kyle Olson and Morgan Geekie took advantage of a low two-on-one and Geekie closed with the tap-in for the first goal. The second goal came on Tri-City’s third and final power play with five minutes remaining in the game.

The Tips had a significant shot advantage for the first 55 minutes. About a third of Tri-City’s chances came in the final five minutes after the Americans scored their second goal and pulled goaltender Beck Warm for a sixth skater.

The Turning Point

Riley Sutter’s wrister from the high slot at 15:01 in the second period gave the Tips a two-goal lead.

Three Stars

1. Everett F Eetu Tuulola: The Finn scored twice in his regular-season home debut and was plus-two.

2. Everett F Riley Sutter: The 17-year-old, who had his birthday last week, scored the game-winning goal in the second period and finished plus-one.

3. Everett D Noah Juulsen: The captain was also named the captain of Team WHL for the Canada-Russia Series next week.

Honorable Mention: Everett F Spencer Gerth (first career goal), Tri-City F Kyle Olson (two assists).
