REFLECTIONS: Luding, Davis help Tips snap losing streak

The Game

Dorrin Luding had the bounce-back game he and his Silvertips teammates were looking for. The 18-year-old goaltender had his first career shutout as the Tips snapped a two-game losing streak in a 1-0 win at Calgary.

Kevin Davis picked a fine time for his first goal of the season as he rocketed a shot past goaltender Nick Schneider in the final period off an assist from Riley Sutter.

You might recall that last season the Tips went 5-1 on their trip to the East Division. While it’s a new year and a different division, it’s worth wondering if this year’s trip to the Central Division will yield similar success. Lethbridge and Medicine Hat were thought to be the preseason favorites in the division. Those games loom next week.

The Tips mixed up the top line again Friday. Orrin Centazzo played on the top line with center Matt Fonteyne and winger Patrick Bajkov. Sean Richards, who played on the top line Wednesday was on the third line. Connor Dewar, fresh off a hat trick at Spokane on Wednesday, remained on the second line with Sutter and Martin Fasko-Rudas.

Pavel Azhgirei made his second appearance of the season, while Ethan Browne was a healthy scratch for the second straight game.

The Turning Point

Davis’s shot snuck past Schneider three minutes into the third period and the Tips held on for the 1-0 victory.

Three Stars

– Everett G Dorrin Luding: Luding recorded his first career shutout with 29 saves.

– Everett F Kevin Davis: Davis scored the game’s only goal in the third period.

– Medicine Hat G Nick Schneider: Schneider was the hard-luck loser with 32 saves.

The Box Score

Of Note:

Hunter Campbell was in the lineup for the Hitmen. The rookie forward is a native of Everett and was Calgary’s third-round pick in the 2016 bantam draft. Campbell played on the 16-U Everett Junior Silvertips last season where he was a linemate of current Tips forward Dawson Butt.

He had 12 goals and 15 assists in 22 games for the Junior Tips last season.
