Saturday, July 26 was SR Custom Auto and Superior Refrigeration night at Ephrata Raceway Park featuring a fully loaded five-class racing card. In action at the racetrack were the 360 Sprint cars, Limited Late Model Racing Series (see above), Mini Stocks, Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornets and the BIG CARS.

After Kurt Meyers set fast time in the 360 Sprint cars with a 13.51 second lap, Kevin Witte won the dash and Doug Peter won the heat race. In the main event, it looked like a repeat of the midseason championship night second main event for the 360 Sprint cars with Doug Peter setting the pace and opening a commanding lead as Mike Fought and Kurt Meyer struggled with traffic. A mid-race caution closed the field and Fought worked his way around Peter for the win going away. For Fought it was his third straight 360 Sprint car main event win at Ephrata Raceway Park.

It was Ladies Night in the Kim Janke State Farm Agent Youth Hornet division as Stephnie Patty set fast time of 17.40, then won the main event. Tara Noakes won the A trophy dash and Jatender Veenstra was the A heat race winner. Also picking up wins were Derek Burck in the B trophy dash and Austin Schooler in the B heat race.

For the Mini Stocks, Joe Smith was the man of the night. He won the A dash, A heat race and the main event in a great battle with Jeff Hector. Hector set fast time at 16.49. Nick Gardner won the B dash and Charles Larr won the B heat race.

Once again the BIG CARS left a lasting impression. After Chris McCart set fast time at 18.37, Daniel Hector and Josh Hector won the two trophy dashes. Then Josh Hector won the heat race. In the main event, the cars were lined up straight up by time. From a standing start the cars went backwards from the start finish line around the track once. When they crossed the start finish line ending the first lap then headed back into traffic coming at them head on backwards! Travis Lucas and Robert Henderson went out on that first lap with an astonishingly hard hit that took out both cars right on the front straight. The race was red flagged to make sure both drivers were okay but the cars were done. From then on, it was the usually entertaining assortment of spins, 360’s and wrecks with Chris McCart winding up the winner.

Matt Hein won the Art Pollard Memorial as the American Speed Association Northwest Sprint Car Series made it’s final stop for 2008 at Douglas County Speedway for the running of the Art Pollard Memorial on Saturday, July 26 in Roseburg, Ore.

Hein started the race from the outside of row three, but moved into the lead on the fourth lap. A caution reset the field to the last completed lapt, moving Hein back into second place.

That was a temporary setback, however, as Hein retook the lead on the restart. He weather several more cautions but wasn’t seriously challenged the rest of the way.

Andy Alberding finished second, R. J. Fronsman was third, Cory Lockwood came in fourth and Todd Coleman rounded out the top five.

Alberding set fast time with a lap of 12.658 seconds. Adam Roduner and Hein won the trophy dashes. Sierra Jackson and Roduner won the heat races.
