Reigning U.S. figure skating champions to compete in Everett

Nathan Chen and Bradie Tennell are among the athletes picked to compete at Skate America in October

EVERETT — Reigning men’s world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Nathan Chen headlines the skaters tabbed to compete at 2018 Skate America on Oct. 19-21 at Angel of the Winds Arena.

The International Skating Union announced the selections last week.

Chen, the two-time men’s U.S. national champion who took bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, was one of a host of 2018 U.S. champions selected to compete in Everett. Also selected were reigning ladies national champion Bradie Tennell, reigning pairs national champions Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim, and reigning ice dancing national champions Maddison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue.

Among the international competitors selected were Japan’s Satoko Miyahara, the women’s 2015 world silver medalist and 2018 world bronze medalist; and Russia’s Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, the two-time defending pairs European champions and reigning world silver medalists. In total, 23 of the entrants participated at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Edmonds native Jean-Luc Baker and his partner, Kaitlin Hawayek, were not selected for the ice dancing competition. The U.S. has one more entry in each category that will be announced at a later date. However, Baker and Hawayek expected to compete in two ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events during the 2018 season, and were selected for the NHK Trophy in Hiroshima, Japan, on Nov. 9-11 and Internationaux de France in Grenoble, France, on Nov. 23-25, so are unlikely to compete in Everett.
