This morning a reader forwarded me a link to a story in The Salt Lake Tribune. Brigham Young University has decided to not release Monroe volleyball player Kylin Munoz from her National Letter of Intent, the article says.
Munoz, a highly rated 6-foot-1 outside hitter, signed with BYU in November but later asked to be released from her binding commitment to play for the Cougars. Last week Munoz contacted local sportswriters via e-mail and shared her desire to attend the University of Washington.
According to the The Salt Lake Tribune story, BYU’s decision to not release Munoz means the prep star must sit out one year if she enrolls at a different NCAA Division I school. The report says BYU volleyball coach Shay Goulding “said the decision was made to protect the integrity of the national letter of intent system for all schools, and because it would ‘set a bad precedent’ if another BYU signee in any sport decides to ask for a release after signing the binding contract.”
The story, published yesterday, triggered a flurry of comments. Some readers support BYU’s decision. Others criticize it.
