SEATTLE — He might not be the next Detlef Schrempf, or even the next Patrick Femerling or Christian Welp, but the University of Washington men’s basketball team just hopes its latest product of Germany can help shore up some size issues inside.

According to numerous weekend report

s, the Huskies have landed 6-foot-9 German forward Martin Breunig as the eventual fifth member of their 2011-12 recruiting class.

Breunig was originally a Maryland recruit but re-opened his recruitment when coach Gary Williams retired.
Breunig has yet to officially sign a letter of intent but has reportedly given UW a verbal commitment.

Breunig would add size to a frontline that lost 6-foot-9 Matthew Bryan-Amaning and 6-6 Justin Holiday to graduation, leaving 7-footer Aziz N-Diaye and 6-8 Darnell Gant as the only experienced big men on the roster.

The Huskies were rather thin inside after losing out to players like Joshua Smith (went to UCLA) and Terrence Jones (Kentucky) in last year’s recruiting season.

Breunig is expected to join a recruiting class that already included point guards Tony Wroten Jr. and Andrew Andrews, shooting guard Hikeem Stewart and 6-10 forward Jernard Jarreau.

The 6-9 Bruenig is a wing player who is attending a military school in Wisconsin, averaging around 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. He also had offers from Temple and South Florida before committing to UW.
