Marshawn Lynch’s future with the Seahawks has been a topic of discussion going back to last summer and his training camp holdout, but instead of the Seahawks releasing the running back, might he retire instead?
According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Lynch, who will turn 29 before the 2015 season, is considering retiring after this season, in part because of his health. Lynch has missed just one game since joining the Seahawks in 2010, but he regularly misses a day or two of practice each week, usually because of back issues that have plagued him for most of his career. According to the NFL.com report, Lynch has compressed cartilage in his spinal cord.
You may recall, however, that Lynch also told some teammates he might retire last season as well if the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, and he came back. For any athlete, passing up millions on the back end of a short career can be a tough decision, and Lynch is due $7 million if the Seahawks actually wanted him back on his current deal, and would stand to make millions, even if not that much, if Seattle were to release him in a cap saving move or convince him to restructure his deal.
One other possibility mentioned in the report is that Lynch could try to follow Tom Cable to another team if Seattle’s offensive line coach/assistant head coach were to land a head coaching job. Cable, who has been a head coach before with Oakland, is frequently mentioned as a possible candidate when jobs come open. For that to happen, of course, Seattle would either have to release Lynch or trade him in that hypothetical situation.
As has been the case with other speculation, none of this really matters right now, but it will be something to keep an eye on in the offseason.
