Rutgers apparently has wasted no time in filling its head football coach vacancy.
Chris Ash, Ohio State co-defensive coordinator, is in negotiations with Rutgers, and while the university has not issued any statements about the potential hire that was first reported by SI. com, Rutgers Board of Governors will meet Monday, at which it is expected to approve the hiring of Ash. A news conference would follow.
The news comes seven days after Rutgers ended a 4-8 season with a loss to Maryland and six days after head coach Kyle Flood and athletic director Julie Hermann were fired.
New athletic director Patrick Hobbs headed the search for a new coach, with input from several Board of Trustees members and university president Robert Barchi.
Ash emerged as the leading candidate from a pool that also included Al Golden, former Temple and Miami coach. There was sentiment among Rutgers fans for former coach Greg Schiano to return, but Schiano reportedly was not interested.
Ash has a Big Ten background having worked as an assistant at Wisconsin for three years before coming to Ohio State two years ago.
Flood’ s four-year tenure came to an end after a losing season in which he was suspended for three games for improperly approaching a professor about a player’s grade and headlines about seven players being arrested for off-the-field activities.
