Tonight marks the end of the league’s current collective bargaining agreement, which means if Matt Hasselbeck doesn’t re-sign with Seattle today, he’s likely headed towards free agency, whenever that might happen.
And according to Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network, the two sides aren’t very close to a deal.
“Matt Hasselbeck just turned down Seattle’s last offer. They’re concerned about getting him re-signed. They’re not close on a contract yet,” Lombardi said on Wednesday night’s edition of NFL Total Access.
Now this doesn’t mean a deal won’t get done. For one, it’s possible the two sides could be talking today, and with a deadline looming, will come to an agreement. Or Hasselbeck could hit free agency if and when that happens, and decide to stay in Seattle. But if Hasselbeck is on the open market, there are sure to be plenty of other interested teams, which could drive up the price for Seattle to keep him.
And one other, far less important QB note, Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange reported late Wednesday night that the Seahawks have waived QB Nate Davis. Davis, formerly of San Francisco, was signed by Seattle only in January. It’s like Davis had a good chance to be a starter, or even backup next season, but to let him go this soon after signing him was a bit of a surprise. Perhaps that is a sign that the Seahawks like this year’s draft class of QBs and are confident they’ll find somebody they like in April.
