Lofa Tatupu and and the Seahawks are having talks about restructuring his contract, reports Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. That could mean Tatupu sticks around after taking a pay cut, but when those talks come up, there is always a chance of the player being released as well if he isn’t willing to agree to a deal.
Tatupu, who signed a contract extension in 2008 that runs through 2015, is scheduled to make $4.35 million this year, next year and in 2013, then slightly more the final two years of the deal. That deal was signed after Tatupu made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons in the league, but he has sense battled injuries, particularly in 2009 when he played in only five games after tearing a pectoral muscle. Tatupu started all 16 games last season, but frequently had to be held out of practice as the season went on, and he had knee surgery in the offseason.
Based on his injury history, as well as the strong play of David Hawthorne at MLB when Tatupu was hurt, the Seahawks must feel they have the leverage to reduce his pay.
