Jamey Wright, who gave the Mariners some much-needed bullpen depth after they signed him midway through last season, is returning to the M’s on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Wright, 36, went 0-1 with a 3.41 earned run average in 37 innings of relief over 28 games. He signed with the M’s as a free agent on July 15 after starting the season with the Cleveland Indians.
Wright went 1-2, 5.48 in 18 games before the Indians released him on June 10. He signed with the Oakland A’s six days later but never made it past Class AAA Sacramento before the A’s released him July 14. The Mariners signed him the next day.
This is Wright’s third stint with the Mariners. He signed as a free agent before the 2003 season but was released late in spring training.
Wright, a starter most of the first 11 years of his career, has pitched for the Rockies, Brewers, Cardinals, Royals, Giants, Rangers and Indians in addition to the Mariners. He hasn’t started since 2007 with the Rangers and has pitched 232 games in relief since.
He made $900,000 last year.
