Richards Memorial tournament coming

The inaugural Gordon Richards Memorial Best Ball Championship is scheduled for May 4-5 at Snohomish and Battle Creek golf courses. The event honors Richards, who served as head pro at Tacoma Country and Golf Club, Broadmoor Golf Club and Overlake Golf and Country Club in a 50-year career, and was the builder of Snohomish Golf Course in 1965.

The tournament for two-man teams will be held at Snohomish on May 4 and Battle Creek on May 5, with 10 a.m. starting times both days. There will be two divisions with a gross and net payout, and the champions will be the low-gross team of the field.

The entry fee is $125 per player and includes a practice round at each course (between Monday and May 3, after noon), range balls for both days of the tournament, lunch after each round and a Wilson golf tee prize.

The total prize fund with a full field of 32 teams will be $2,500.

Gleneagle offers savings through AGPA program: Arlington’s Gleneagle Golf Course is one of the three Seattle-area courses to offer discounts through membership in the American Golf Players Association (AGPA). Full members ($49.95) and associate members ($29.95) receive discounts on green fees, carts, range balls, food and beverages, merchandise and rentals along with other benefits.

Other AGPA participating courses in the Seattle area are Capitol City Golf Club in Olympia and Lake Wilderness Golf Course in Maple Valley.

Spinal Cord Society to hold benefit tourney: The Northwest Chapter of the Spinal Cord Society will hold its seventh-annual charity golf tournament on June 17 at Mill Creek Country Club. Net proceeds from the event, which begins at noon, will go to spinal cord injury cure research.

Cost for the tournament, which includes a box lunch, golf cart, dinner and auction, is $195. Seattle SuperSonics radio broadcaster Kevin Calabro will participate in the tourney and will be master of ceremonies.

Lakewood coaches tourney set for June 1: The Lakewood High School Coaches Association will holding its Third Annual Cougar Classic Golf Tournament on June 1 at Camaloch Golf Course on Camano Island. The four-person best-ball tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with an optional putting contest. Cost is $65 before May 1 and $75 after May 1. All golfers receive a t-shirt, sleeve of golf balls and barbecue lunch. All proceeds go to benefit the Lakewood High School athletic program. Event planned at Port Townsend: Windermere-Port Townsend Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 4 at Chevy Chase golf course. The 18-hole tournament will feature a scramble format with registration starting at 11 a.m. and play commencing at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $60 with proceeds benefiting the Centrum Arts and Creative Education center located at Fort Worden State Park Conference Center in Port Townsend. Junior championship set for June 17: The Fifth Annual Pacific Northwest AAU Junior Golf Championship will be held at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima on June 17.
