MILL CREEK — Richmond scored eight runs in the fifth inning Friday on its way to beating Larch Mountain 12-5 in an elimination game of the Washington State Little League Baseball Tournament at Freedom Field.
Richmond advanced to an 11 a.m. loser-out game today against District 2 champion Bainbridge Island. The Richmond-Bainbridge Island winner plays Mill Creek for the championship at 1 p.m. Sunday and must beat Mill Creek twice to claim the title.
Now 4-0 in elimination games, Richmond found itself in a familiar position: losing late in the game. But as it has done all week, the District 3 champs put the game out of reach with a big inning. Behind 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, Kory Longaker drilled a 1-1 pitch out of the park to tie the score at 5-5. The team ended up sending 13 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring eight of them on six hits, three walks, and a costly Larch Mountain error.
Ben Tracey, who came on in relief of Kory Longaker in the second, allowed just two runs and struck out nine to earn the win.
Larch Mountain finished fourth in the tournament.
