Rollergirls move to EvCC

The Jet City Rollergirls will open their fourth season of flat track roller derby on Saturday night with a new venue, but the same old excitement.

After three years at Edmonds Community College, the four-team Jet City league will move to the new gymnasium at Everett Community College for the 2011 season. Saturday’s event begins at 6 p.m. with Camaro Harem facing the Hula Honeys, followed by the Pink Pistols against CarnEvil.

“The days counting down to the opener are full of excitement for everybody,” said league president Meagan Cordova of Shoreline, a former skater who competed as Double d’Ablo. “We can’t wait to get out there and compete, and we can’t wait to reconnect with our fans.”

The Rollergirls are moving to Everett for two reasons, Cordova explained. The league has always been based in Everett even though home matches were in Edmonds, she said. But the league has also outgrown the Edmonds CC gym, which had a roller derby seating capacity of under 1,000, necessitating a move to the new Everett CC gym, which can hold about 2,400 for roller derby.

“We’re hoping that by competing in Everett we can appeal to our local fan base more,” Cordova said. “That’s where our fans are. And we’re moving to a brand new facility, and that’s exciting for us also.”

Sellouts, which were common at the Edmonds CC gym, will be more difficult in Everett. “But we still want to fill the house,” Cordova said. “That’s the hope.”

Jet City also has an all-star team known as the Bombers, which will have matches this season with teams from Montreal, Denver, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Jose, Calif., Atlanta and Kansas City. The matches against Montreal (Feb. 12), Kansas City (June 24) and Atlanta (June 25) will be in Everett.

Jet City offers six-match season tickets for $75 for adults, and $50 for youth 6-12 (children 5 and under are free). Single-match tickets are $13 for adults and $9 for youth 6-12, and there are discounts ($11) for groups of 10 or more.

Tickets can be purchased in advance on-line at www.brownpapertickets.com, or at the door.
