Silvertips captain Ryan Murray and the rest of Team Canada crashed out of gold-medal contention at the World Junior Hockey Championships with a 6-5 loss to Russia in the semifinals tonight. Russia led 6-1 with 10 minutes remaining before Canada mounted a furious comeback, and the Canadians drew iron at the end when desperately trying for the tying goal. Unfortunately, Murray is bearing some of the brunt of this one as Russia’s first two goals were both accidentally deflected by Murray past his own goaltender. Luck wasn’t on Murray’s side tonight.
Canada thus won’t be playing for gold for the first time since 2001. The Canadians face Finland for the bronze on Thursday.
