The Calgary Flames announced the purchase on the NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks on Tuesday.
The Flames will own and operate the Roughnecks franchise as the team moves forward.
The Roughnecks entered the NLL in 2001 as an expansion franchise. They won the NLL championship in 2004 and 2009 and were eliminated by the Washington Stealth in the West Finals in 2010.
“We are proud to welcome a great organization like the Calgary Flames to the National Lacrosse League,” NLL commissioner George Daniel said on the league’s website. “The Roughnecks will no doubt be a showcase franchise for the NLL for years to come.”
The Roughnecks owner since the team’s inception, Brad Banister, was pleased to get the deal done.
“I am extremely pleased we were able to do a deal with the Calgary Flames that will ensure the Calgary Roughnecks will stay in the community that has stood by them for the last 10 years,” Banister said on the league’s website.
It was also announced that Mike Board and Mike Moore have been named General Manager and Director of Business Operations respectively for the Rougnecks.
