LAKE STEVENS – Kelly Foster, a junior at Lake Stevens High School, has been invited to try out for the Junior Women’s National Rowing Team that will compete in Athens, Greece, in August.
Foster, 17, is scheduled to take part in a training camp in Chula Vista, Calif., in June. She is one of 27 rowers/coxswains invited to the first of two tryout camps.
In February, Foster set a world record for 2,000 meters at the World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston.
Last month, she was part of an Everett Rowing Club junior women’s team that won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter race at the prestigious Brentwood Regatta in Mill Bay, B.C.
Wrestling
USA Everett dominates: The USA Everett Wrestling Club won the team title at the State Freestyle Championships held April 26-27 in Sedro-Woolley. USA Everett finished with 365 points. The runner-up team scored 165.
USA Everett led the meet with 11 individual champions. The group included William Dubuque, 5, of Everett (40 pounds, pee wee division), Dalton Gilman, 7, of Sultan (50 pounds, bantam), Jordan Watts, 9, of Mount Vernon (70 pounds, midget), Joshua Villani, 9, of Bellevue (75 pounds, midget), Andrew King, 9, of Marysville (103 pounds, midget), JoMae Alewine, 10, of Marysville (60 pounds, novice), Andy Zuniga, 12, Bothell (70 pounds, novice), Derek Garcia, 11, Big Lake (90 pounds, novice), Zack Zweiffel, 12, of Conway (75 pounds, schoolboy), Kevin O’Neil, 12, Sedro-Woolley (90 pounds, schoolboy), and Kai Bruno, 14, of Lynnwood (110 pounds, schoolboy).

Gymnastics
State champions crowned: The Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics Level 4 team placed second April 26 at the 26-team Washington State Championships in Bellevue. The squad’s score of 114.025 was a team record.
Maribeth Mayer, 14, of Everett, led the team with two state titles in her age group. Mayer won the vault with a score of 9.60 and the balance beam with a mark of 9.65.
Other age-division state champs for Leading Edge included Kendall Shelford, 8, of Snohomish, who won the vault (9.575); Carah Solemsaas, 7, of Lake Stevens, who won the vault (9.55), and Jenny Kayla, 10, of Everett, who placed first in the uneven bars.
Track and Field
Lake Stevens grad wins 800: Stuart Chaffee, a 1999 graduate of Lake Stevens High School, won the men’s 800-meter race last week at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track Championships in Ellensburg. He finished in a time of 1 minute, 54.60 seconds. Chaffee, a senior and a team captain, was also a member of the Wolves’ winning 1600 relay team.
Softball
Nealer honored again: Amanda Nealer, a graduate of Jackson High School, was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 21- 27. Nealer pitched a three-hit shutout against Western Kentucky on April 27 to up her season record to 18-7 and lower her earned-run average to 1.45. This is the second time this season Nealer has earned player-of-the-week honors.
Crusaders claim tourney title: The Arlington-based Washington Crusaders U-14 girls fastpitch softball team won the Derby Weekend Tournament held Saturday and Sunday in West Seattle.
The Crusaders posted a 6-0 record, including a 16-4 victory over ASA Xtreme in the championship game. Shayna Prause homered for the winners in the title game. Other offensive standouts included Lauren Petty (four runs), Sheena Twitchell (two doubles and three runs), Desiree Sanchez (two doubles and three runs) and Shelly Aikens (triple, two runs).
