Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray was named captain of Canada’s team for the U-18 World Championships, Hockey Canada announced today.
This is a great honor for Murray. It was also inevitable. Murray is the only returning player from the team that represented Canada at the U-18 World Championships last year. He captained Canada’s team to the gold medal at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Tournament last summer, and he’s already been named Everett’s captain for the 2011-12 season. So this position was made for Murray.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Canadians fare in this tournament. Canada always fields a below-strength team at the World Championships because players who are still involved in the CHL playoffs are unavailable. Last year Canada found itself in the unusual position of having to win to avoid relegation to the B pool. This year Canada is very young on defense and questionable in goal. If Murray can lead the Canadians to a medal, it’ll be quite the testament.
