S. Whidbey blanks Nooksack Valley 4-0 in boys soccer

LANGLEY – With 12 seniors on its roster, the South Whidbey boys soccer team has leadership to spare.

The Falcons’ experience was on full display Saturday as South Whidbey defeated Nooksack Valley 4-0 in a non-conference match at South Whidbey High School.

“Nooksack played very composed and they’re a good team,” South Whidbey coach Joel Gerlach said. “But they are very young and we were just a little bigger and a little stronger.”

Gerlach said the play of senior defenders Ben Rusch, Richard McLean and Nate Goodman, who also made two assists, was a key to Saturday’s victory.

“Our defense played great today,” Gerlach said. “We had three big seniors back there, which is why we’re such a strong team in our conference.”

Robbie Bailey and Duncan Adams each scored a goal in the first half to give the Falcons a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Regular starting goalkeeper Oliver Shafaat played the field Saturday and scored his first goal of the season to give South Whidbey a 3-0 lead. Alex McGlen took Shafaat’s place in goal and earned his second shutout of the season.

John Gerlach scored in the 79th minute to finish the scoring.
