She didn’t want to admit it – didn’t even want to think about it.
Saturday marked the final game for South Whidbey High School soccer standout Claudia Gil-Osorio, who scored 32 goals during the Falcons’ run to the Class 2A state championship game.
Though Gil-Osorio is one of five seniors starters who won’t be back, she said the Falcons should be a factor in the state playoffs again next season.
“They will be good,” Gil-Osorio said after her team fell 1-0 to Connell in a shootout Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood. “And my sister (Martha Rocio Gil-Osorio) will be playing. So, I’ll be coming to watch.”
The Falcons will return midfielder Katie Watson and sweeper Rita Jones, the sophomore directors of the team’s offense and defense, respectively.
Goalkeeper Allyson Riggs, who posted 12 shutouts, also returns along with scoring threat Jenna Wild.
Falcons coach Paul Arand liked what he saw from his young players this season.
“We’ll lose Claudia, but I think we’ll be a strong team,” Arand said. “The J.V. team was undefeated this year, and last year, they lost one game. And our middle school program has 60 girls playing soccer.”
New coaches: The Western Conference features several new basketball coaches this winter:
Tom Tri, Lake Stevens girls basketball, (in place of Steve Berg); Mark Hein, Lake Steven boys (Norm Lowery); Julie Martin, Marysville-Pilchuck girls (Emil Whitman); Jeannie Howell, Jackson girls (Julie Iverson); Kim Stewart, Mountlake Terrace girls (Nick Greenwell).
Cascade bowling team wins: Jackson’s Jennifer Whetzel bowled a 264 game and a three-game series of 657, but Cascade’s depth paid off Nov. 18 in a six-team event won by Cascade at Riverside Lanes in Mount Vernon. Tiffany Triechmann led Cascade with a series of 553.
Jackson rolls his first 700: Mariner’s Joshua Jackson bowled games of 203, 276 and 230 for a series of 709 last week. It was his first time above the 700 mark. Jackson’s Jon Gunderson rolled a 279 at the Everett Parks &Recreation League event.
