Seahawks safety Earl Thomas and running back Marshawn Lynch have been two of Seattle’s best and most important players since the 2010 season, but it turns out they were never particularly close through their first four seasons as teammates.
Yet if you have been paying attention this season, you’ve seen Thomas and Lynch stare each other down on the sideline in an odd, celebratory moment after a big Lynch run, or perhaps you noticed that a helmetless-Thomas was one of the first people to greet Lynch in the end zone after his 79-yard run in Arizona. It turns out, Thomas said, those moments are the result of those two forming a closer bond this season.
“Just a mutual understanding,” Thomas said. “The biggest surprise out of this year to me is our relationship. Since I’ve been here, we never really connected, but I just decided to go talk to him and see what type of guy he was, and I realized, ‘man, this guy’s just like me in a lot of ways.’”
As for what he sees in Lynch, Thomas said, “He’s a dog. He’s a dog. His whole demeanor, he’s a man amongst boys out there.”
Thomas’ reason for deciding to connect with Lynch this year was simple, and so Earl Thomas-y, if that makes sense.
“It was just me listening to my inner voice,” he said. “My inner voice is never wrong, so I did it.”
