A daily look at the Seattle Mariners in spring training:

Saturday in camp

Torrents of rain and a cool wind kept pitchers and catchers bundled up and under cover for the morning workout. About half the Mariners’ pitchers threw 30-pitch bullpen sessions, and they all took part in fielding drills in the team’s covered batting cage area.

Saturday marked the arrival of second baseman Bret Boone and first baseman Richie Sexson, leaving third baseman Adrian Beltre, shortstop Pokey Reese and right fielder Ichiro Suzuki as the only projected starters who haven’t joined camp. The position players aren’t required to report until Monday, with their first workout on Tuesday.

Today in camp

More throwing and drills for the pitchers and catchers, with the position players who are here working out and hitting on their own.

Weather report

Anybody got a rubber raft? Today is expected to be a repeat of Saturday, with rain and temperatures ranging from the high 40s in the morning to the low 60s in the afternoon. The long-range forecast predicts rain every day until Thursday.

They said it

“Freddy has been my idol since I was 15.”

Mariners pitching prospect Felix Hernandez, speaking of fellow Venezuelan Freddy Garcia. That would make it a three-year hero worship, because Hernandez is only 18.

They did it

Bret Boone’s attire – if not his swagger – made it clear the Mariners’ second baseman had arrived. The inscription across the chest of his T-shirt read “Natural Blonde” and each lower leg of the striped pajama bottoms he wore contained the words “The Boone.” It went further. His elbow pad was embroidered with “The Boone,” as were each of his socks.
