A daily look at the Seattle Mariners in spring training.
In his first outing of spring training, 42-year-old Jamie Moyer pitched two perfect innings, striking out one. The Mariners lost 5-2 to the San Diego Padres Saturday at Peoria Stadium. Eighteen-year-old former Everett AquaSox pitcher Felix Hernandez got through the third inning unscathed, despite the fact that his cap fell off his head 11 times because of Big Hair Syndrome. Hernandez said he let his hair grow longer than he ever previously had. He said it distracted him and will get it cut today.
Today in camp
The M’s again play the San Diego Padres at Peoria Stadium. Starting for the Mariners will be right-hander Gil Meche, who was impressive in a perfect two-inning stint in a practice game Wednesday against the Padres in a B game. Also scheduled to throw are right-hander Cha Seung Baek, left-hander Nathan Bland, left-hander Jared Thomas and right-hander Rick Guttormson, who graduated from Anacortes High School and attended Edmonds Community College.
On the trainer’s table
Left-handed pitcher Travis Blackley (shoulder) is on the 60-day DL. First baseman Bucky Jacobsen may be out another month, recovering from off-season knee surgery. Outfielder Chris Snelling had knee surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss six weeks. Snelling tore the medial meniscus in his left knee.
Weather report
Possible thundershowers today, with a high of 70 and a low of 54.
They said it
“Maybe he should wear a chin strap.” Moyer, on Hernandez’s cap trouble.
They did it
Careful to avoid injury, M’s first baseman Richie Sexson let himself get thrown out at the plate on a throw from right field. Sexson, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, practically trotted home from third base and failed to slide, letting catcher Ramon Hernandez tag him out in the fourth inning. A Pete Rose moment it wasn’t.
