The Huskies held their second open-to-the-media practice this afternoon on a gorgeous day at Husky Stadium.
No injuries or crazy lineups to report, but a few notable happenings.
Most of the practice was spent scrimmaging, and according to the scoreboard the defense beat the offense 31-29 using a scoring system that awards different amounts of points for things like first downs, defensive stops, turnovers, etc. Apparently that score was wrong, however, and the offense actually won, but it was close. Tailback Brandon Johnson said it was actually 34-31 or something close to that.
That’s a pretty big improvement for the defense, which looked quite a bit behind the offense last Saturday.
Only two touchdowns were scored, one a 16-yard run by Brandon Johnson and the other a 74-yard pass from Jake Locker to D’Andre Goodwin on which Goodwin got past the defense while Locker was scrambling towards the sideline. Goodwin also had the catch of the day, making a one-handed grab for a 24-yard completion on third-and-10.
The frequent defensive stops led to a number of field-goal attempts, and the kicking game looked pretty solid. Erik Folk made kicks of 23 and 33 yards, Ryan Perkins hit a 37 yarder, Cory Rutkowski was good from 32 yards, and Jared Ballman went 1 for 2 on a pair of 43-yard attempts.
Jake Locker continued to look sharp throwing the ball, and backup Ronnie Fouch, who struggled last weekend, threw the ball much better today.
Sophomore safety Nate Williams notice the improvement in the defense, saying it was, “Definitely better than last week. We’re really starting to get the concepts of the defensive down and having fun. It was definitely better than last week and hopefully in the next week we’ll pick it up even more.”
