It was first reported last night, but the Seahawks officially announced the signing of linebacker Matt McCoy this morning. McCoy, who came into the league as a second-round pick in 2005, spent the past two season in Tampa Bay, and started two games last year.
Bigger news could be on the horizon for Seattle, however, as it appears they are close acquiring quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. Both Seattle and Arizona have shown interest in Whitehurst and Derek Anderson, and Anderson signed with the Cardinals today making Seattle the frontrunner to land Whitehurst, San Diego’s No. 3 quarterback.
ESPN’s John Clayton reported today that Whitehurst plans on signing a one-year tender with San Diego, a move that would have to be the first step towards him coming to Seattle. Because Seattle does not have a third-round pick, which it would need to sign Whitehurst to an offer sheet, the Seahawks will have to work out another form of compensation with the Chargers.
