Seahawks break camp: McDaniel arrives; Earl as Dos Equis guy

The Seahawks officially broke training camp following Tuesday’s practice. That doesn’t actually change much in terms of Seattle’s preparation for the season. However, it does mean two specific things:

1) Practices are no longer open to the fans. That means not only that fans will no longer be crowding the hill at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, it means the media no longer will be able to provide detailed practice reports. So it was fun while it lasted. Here’s a final video from practice:

2) The players no longer have to stay at the team hotel. Therefore, those who have homes in the area can now go back to those. It’s a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but I’m sure it’s a pretty big thing for those players.

Anyway, here’s a few things from the final day of training camp:

– The team confirmed the signing of defensive tackle Tony McDaniel. McDaniel, who played with the Seahawks in 2013-14, returns to the team to provide veteran depth at defensive tackle. He took part in Tuesday’s practice, playing with the second-team defense, and said he expects to be able to play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Perhaps most interestingly, however, was the story of how McDaniel came to be back with the Seahawks:

“I was down in Leavenworth hiking and kayaking. My agent saw me on Snapchat and realized I was in Washington, so he decided to contact the Seahawks and ask them to bring me in for a workout. That’s kind of how that happened. It’s amazing how social media can help you out.”

To make room for McDaniel on the roster the Seahawks waived/injured cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, who suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday’s 17-16 preseason victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

– Cornerback Richard Sherman took the podium Tuesday and had some fun things to say about his teammate and fellow Legion of Boom member Earl Thomas. Thomas is renown for his intensity, and Sherman expounded on the point:

“Earl Thomas is kind of like the Dos Equis guy, or Chuck Norris.

“Nobody watches practice harder. Practice watches Earl Thomas, Earl Thomas does not watch practice.”

“People don’t get to see him work on a daily basis, they don’t see how hard he goes, how hard he practices, even when the practice doesn’t matter. You guys don’t get to see walkthroughs, but in walkthroughs he doesn’t let people catch the ball, he doesn’t let people execute their plays. We’re supposed to let the offense catch it, he just doesn’t live his life that way.”

Does the ultra-intense Thomas have his lighter moments?

“He has a ton of lighter moments, but I’m not going to allow you to see them because he doesn’t allow you to see them.”

– The players practiced without pads and helmets Tuesday, so the lower-intensity practice allowed some players who have been banged up to get back into the mix. The most notable of those was tackle J’Marcus Webb, who was back in full participation following his twisted knee. However, Webb did not return to the first-team offensive line, instead seeing time with the second unit at right tackle. That meant Garry Gilliam remained at right tackle and Bradley Sowell at left tackle with the first team.

Linebacker Mike Morgan was back at practice after visiting a doctor in Philadelphia on Monday because of a groin issue. Morgan sat out most of practice. Defensive tackle Jordan Hill (groin) took part in some position drills, though he did not take part in scrimmaging. Strong safety Kam Chancellor (groin) remained out.
